As an attempt to revitalize the iconic The Ring franchise, "Rings" (2017), directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez, struggles to find its own identity. The film endeavors to delve into Samara Morgan's origins, yet it often over-explains, stripping away the very mystery that formed the backbone of this supernatural horror series. From a cinematic technique perspective, Gutiérrez attempts to maintain the somber, characteristic atmosphere of Westernized J-horror, employing a dark color palette and occasionally effective jump scares. However, the film's pacing frequently lags, lacking the crucial escalating tension needed to grip the audience.
Performances by Matilda Lutz as Julia and Alex Roe as Holt are adequate, but insufficient to provide significant impact or emotional depth to an overly familiar narrative. Rather than focusing on psychological dread and the viral spread of a "media curse," "Rings" falls into the trap of a conventional revenge horror film, diluting the themes of social isolation and technological obsession that the original masterfully conveyed. The film's standing within The Ring cinematic universe is a step backward, signaling a lack of innovation and the difficulty in expanding an already potent horror legacy.
