Shinsuke Sato's "Death Note: Light Up The New World" (2016) is a bold yet divisive attempt to expand the iconic universe crafted by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. From a technical filmmaking perspective, the movie showcases considerable investment in its visuals and special effects. The Shinigami, particularly Ryuk and Ama, are rendered impressively, maintaining their requisite macabre aura. The intellectual confrontations, while not reaching the peak intensity of the original, are depicted with dynamic camera work and a rapid editorial pace, striving to build a tense, psychological thriller atmosphere.

However, the depth of the new characters' psychology proves to be a weakness. While Masahiro Higashide, Sôsuke Ikematsu, and Masaki Suda each demonstrate moments of potential, the screenplay appears to deny them sufficient space to forge personalities that truly challenge the legacy of Light and L.
