At over 80, Bruce Beresford returns with a deeply personal and meditative piece on time and memory. 'The Travellers' is not the action-comedy its title might suggest, but a somber, quiet survey of historical wounds and late-life reconciliation. It is an internal journey disguised as a road movie. Luke Bracey's performance offers a compelling mix of rugged exterior and profound vulnerability, creating a fascinating dynamic with Bryan Brown, whose world-weary eyes convey a lifetime of unspoken sorrow. Susie Porter and Celia Massingham, though underused, serve effectively as emotional anchors. The film's flaws lie in its occasionally languid pacing and a somewhat disjointed narrative structure, as if the script itself is lost on the same journey as its characters. Nevertheless, this is a commendable work from a veteran director still diligently excavating the recesses of the human psyche and national identity.
