This adaptation of the classic children's book is a profoundly disappointing piece of animation, a testament to the fact that a stellar voice cast alone does not guarantee success. Ricard Cussó directs with a bizarre, inconsistent tempo, rushing through moral lessons without allowing any genuine emotional depth to settle. The animation possesses a glossy but hollow sheen, lacking the tactile, handcrafted texture that made the source material charming. While Nick Offerman brings his signature warmth, and Nina Oyama and Miranda Otto strive valiantly, the script gives them nothing substantial to chew on. Jordin Sparks' musical number, though professionally produced, feels forced and commercial, missing the organic whimsy that should anchor a story about self-acceptance. The film ultimately delivers a potentially harmful message: that external transformation is required for acceptance, rather than celebrating intrinsic worth, making it a failed gamble in literary adaptation.
