Olivier Megaton's The Last Days Of American Crime, a Netflix Original, stands as a prime example of an ambitious premise undone by its execution. This dystopian action thriller attempts to immerse viewers in a near-future America where a "crime-stopping" signal is imminent. Cinematographically, Megaton employs his signature rapid cuts and excessive slow-motion, often resulting in a visually chaotic and narratively disjointed experience rather than enhancing the tension of its action sequences. While the production design and color palette lean into a dark, gritty cyberpunk aesthetic, they rarely transcend generic tropes to create a truly distinctive world.
Édgar Ramírez, as the protagonist Graham Bricke, delivers a performance with palpable screen presence, yet the shallow script offers little room for genuine character development. Anna Brewster and Michael Pitt, despite their talents, struggle to elevate the flimsy narrative. The film's thematic exploration of individual liberty versus state control, and the very definition of criminality, remains superficial, never fully grappling with its profound philosophical implications. Positioned within the futuristic crime thriller genre, it unfortunately registers as a forgettable entry, a missed opportunity that highlights the pitfalls of relying solely on a high-concept idea without robust storytelling.
