Director Xiang Guo's Shushan Subdues Evil (2019) is a quintessential example of the booming Chinese web film genre, often delivering grand visual spectacles but lacking profound depth. From a cinematic technique perspective, the film heavily relies on computer-generated imagery (CGI) to construct its fantastical cultivation world. However, the CGI quality is highly inconsistent; while some sequences, particularly the majestic landscapes of Shushan, are quite striking, many other segments reveal a noticeable lack of refinement, diminishing the overall visual experience.
Regarding acting direction, performers like Wang Liang, He Yuxiao, and Gao Yuyang, despite their efforts to convey emotion, are often constrained by a simplistic script and one-dimensional characters. Their performances occasionally veer into melodramatic territory, lacking the nuance required to build psychological depth. The film fails to genuinely tap into the rich potential of the ingrained Shushan legends within Chinese culture. Instead, it adheres to genre clichés, presenting a familiar good-versus-evil narrative without notable breakthroughs or fresh perspectives. Shushan Subdues Evil primarily occupies the online entertainment segment within the Xianxia cinematic universe. It merely serves as quick entertainment, struggling to leave a lasting impression.
