Despite carrying the "Marvel" imprimatur, Marvel's Inhumans (Season 1) from 2017 stands as a lamentable example of squandered potential within the superhero genre. The series suffered from fundamental cinematic missteps, most notably its glaringly unconvincing visual effects that rendered the Inhuman powers and the beloved Lockjaw surprisingly artificial. The direction often felt uninspired, struggling to establish either a grand scale or a distinctive visual identity, resulting in flat cinematography and unmemorable framing.
Performances, while earnest, were often hampered by a lackluster script. Anson Mount, portraying the silent Black Bolt, relied heavily on physical presence but was given little depth to explore beyond the character's core definition. Iwan Rheon as the antagonist Maximus offered a glimmer of nuance, yet even his efforts couldn't elevate the disjointed narrative. The thematic exploration of power, royal lineage, and societal conflict within the Inhuman culture felt underdeveloped and lacked emotional resonance. Ultimately, Inhumans occupies an unfortunate, largely forgotten corner of Marvel Television, failing to integrate meaningfully or leave a lasting impact on the broader superhero landscape. It remains a notable misfire in the sci-fi superhero drama.
