As a critic, I find 'Like A Boss' (2020), directed by Miguel Arteta, to be a competent, if not particularly groundbreaking, entry in the female buddy comedy genre. The film navigates themes of female entrepreneurship and friendship within the cutthroat beauty industry, yet often leans on established tropes rather than forging new narrative ground. Cinematographically, Arteta employs a bright, almost glossy aesthetic, coupled with brisk editing, which serves the comedic pace well but rarely ventures into visually innovative territory or impactful mise-en-scène.
The film’s strongest asset is its cast chemistry. Tiffany Haddish brings her signature boisterous charm, perfectly complemented by Rose Byrne’s more understated, deadpan wit. Their dynamic anchors the narrative. However, it's Salma Hayek's deliciously over-the-top portrayal of the villainous Claire Luna that truly captivates, injecting a much-needed jolt of theatricality. While the film attempts to touch upon female empowerment and corporate ethics, its exploration remains largely superficial. 'Like A Boss' ultimately stands as a lighthearted diversion, reinforcing the commercial viability of female-led comedies without pushing their artistic boundaries or leaving a lasting mark on the cinematic landscape.
