Ben Wheatley's 2020 adaptation of Rebecca attempts a vibrant, if occasionally superficial, reimagining of Daphne du Maurier's classic gothic romance. Departing from Hitchcock's iconic shadow, Wheatley opts for a more opulent and visually driven aesthetic, particularly in the sun-drenched Monte Carlo opening. While the production design and costume work for Manderley are undeniably lavish and atmospheric, creating a palpable sense of Rebecca's lingering presence, this emphasis on surface splendor often overshadows the intricate psychological tension that defines the source material.
