Park Je-hyun's "The Huntresses" attempts a lively fusion of historical action and slapstick comedy, set against the backdrop of the Joseon Dynasty. The film follows three formidable female bounty hunters – Jin-ok (Ha Ji-won), Hong-dan (Kang Ye-won), and Ga-bi (Son Ga-in) – on a perilous quest to uncover a treasure while protecting the monarch. The ensemble performance is arguably the film's strongest asset, with Ha Ji-won delivering a robust, charismatic turn that anchors the action, complemented by the natural comedic timing of Kang Ye-won and Son Ga-in, forging a palpable sense of female camaraderie.
Despite earnest efforts in its action choreography, the sequences often feel competent but rarely innovative, at times overshadowed by over-the-top comedic situations. The narrative tries to champion themes of female empowerment and sisterhood, yet these messages remain largely superficial, never fully exploring character depth or the societal context of the Joseon period. "The Huntresses" serves as light entertainment within the South Korean cinematic landscape, offering a frothy take on the period action-comedy genre. While it provides sporadic moments of fun, it ultimately falls short of achieving a memorable or critically acclaimed status due to a somewhat disjointed script and conventional directorial choices.
