Within the enigmatic cinematic universe of Mojin (Ghost Blows Out the Light), Zhou Shengqiang’s 'The Tomb Of Weasel' (2021) offers a fresh foray into tomb raiding. Rather than a mere replication, this installment endeavors to forge its own atmosphere, albeit with varying degrees of success. From a technical filmmaking perspective, the movie presents a blend of evocative ancient setting shots and somewhat inconsistent CGI, particularly during supernatural action sequences. The director attempts to infuse a sense of adventure and dread, but occasional pacing issues can hinder the inherent thrill of this specific subgenre of Chinese fantasy adventure films.
The performances, however, stand out as a notable strength. Fu He An portrays a protagonist with commendable depth, lending credibility to his role as the leader of the perilous expedition. He Lan Dou, with her delicate appearance, manages to convey an underlying resilience, while Xi Yu Li also contributes to the ensemble's dynamic. Together, they form a reasonably cohesive exploration team, overcoming some of the script's challenges. Despite its minor limitations, 'The Tomb Of Weasel' remains a commendable effort to expand the archaeological mystery world of Mojin, attempting to balance entertainment with a deeper exploration of folklore elements, though its core message occasionally gets overshadowed by the action spectacle.
