Rather than a mere replication, this installment endeavors to forge its own atmosphere, albeit with varying degrees of success. From a technical filmmaking perspective, the movie presents a blend of evocative ancient setting shots and somewhat inconsistent CGI, particularly during supernatural action sequences. The director attempts to infuse a sense of adventure and dread, but occasional pacing issues can hinder the inherent thrill of this specific subgenre of Chinese fantasy adventure films.

The performances, however, stand out as a notable strength. Fu He An portrays a protagonist with commendable depth, lending credibility to his role as the leader of the perilous expedition.
