In 2018's Hotel in Wild (also known as Hotel by the River), director Hong Sang-soo further solidifies his distinctive, auteur cinematic style. The film eschews conventional storytelling for a delicate tapestry of life's moments, introspection, and human relationships, all set within a snow-dusted riverside hotel. Hong Sang-soo's signature black and white cinematography is sharp and tranquil, evoking a melancholic, contemplative atmosphere on the transience of old age and loneliness. Long takes and static camera angles allow the audience to delve deeper into the characters' inner worlds. Ki Joo-bong's performance as the aging poet Yeong-hwan is a highlight, authentically conveying weariness, a yearning for connection, and an obsession with mortality. The presence of Kim Min-hee and the ensemble cast provides naturalistic, dialogue-driven interactions, imbued with the existentialism often found in his works. This is a profoundly meditative film, prompting questions about the meaning of life and death.
