Matt Eskandari’s 2020 offering, Hard Kill, firmly plants itself within the burgeoning direct-to-video (DTV) action thriller subgenre, yet fails to carve out any memorable niche. This film, emblematic of many late-career Bruce Willis vehicles, features the venerable actor in a significantly truncated role, often feeling more like a contractual obligation than a substantial performance. His presence, while lending marquee value, contributes minimally to the narrative thrust or emotional resonance, bordering on cameo status.
Cinematically, Hard Kill adheres to a utilitarian, almost perfunctory approach. The cinematography, editing, and stunt choreography are largely generic, reflecting typical low-budget action production values without any inventive flourishes. Action sequences are competently executed but lack genuine tension or stylistic innovation, relying on familiar genre tropes. Jesse Metcalfe delivers a commendable effort as the lead, but struggles against a shallow script riddled with predictable turns and thinly sketched characters. The film’s thematic explorations of corporate espionage and redemption remain superficial. Ultimately, Hard Kill is a disposable entry, adding little to the action landscape beyond its forgettable runtime.
