The directorial baton passed to Tian Li, alongside Jin Shijia stepping into the pivotal role of Guo Deyou, undoubtedly set a high bar for this sequel. While the series admirably maintains its signature visual storytelling – from atmospheric underwater sequences to intricate period production design evoking 1920s Tientsin – it struggles to fully recapture the distinctive alchemy of its predecessor.

Jin Shijia's portrayal of the 'River God' offers a more subdued, introspective interpretation, a departure that some viewers may find divisive. Meanwhile, returning cast members like Zhang Mingen and Wang Ruichang provide a welcome continuity, grounding the narrative.
