While perhaps not scaling the heights of genre classics, Queen Of Triads (2017), directed by Venus Keung, represents a commendable effort to redefine the Hong Kong triad film through a distinctly female lens. Eschewing tired plot summaries, the film plunges into the arduous rise and brutal survival struggles of its female protagonists within a ruthless underworld traditionally dominated by male archetypes.
From a cinematic technique perspective, Queen Of Triads impresses with its competently staged action sequences, though they occasionally lack the groundbreaking originality seen in Hong Kong cinema's golden era. Nevertheless, the raw violence and direct confrontations lend an authentic, visceral edge. The performances by Chrissie Chau, Dada Chan, and Natalie Tong are a standout; they not only embody sharp exteriors but also convey profound inner depth, grappling with loyalty and the yearning for power. Chrissie Chau, in particular, masterfully portrays the "Queen" – resolute yet burdened by unspoken pain.
The film's thematic resonance extends beyond mere vengeance, touching upon female empowerment within patriarchal structures, the solitude of leadership, and the steep price of absolute power. It serves as an intriguing addition to the broader Triad film universe, injecting a fresh, potent, and uncompromising perspective.
