Cyborg 009: Call Of Justice I (2016), under the directorial vision of Kazuya Hoshi and chief direction of Kenji Kamiyama, bravely attempts to revitalize Shotaro Ishinomori’s legendary science fiction franchise, yet its execution often proves divisive. The film’s defining technical choice – a complete shift to 3D CGI animation – creates a visually ambitious but frequently jarring aesthetic. While it facilitates thrilling, large-scale action sequences and dynamic camera work, this fidelity to 3D models sometimes sacrifices the expressive subtlety and organic fluidity synonymous with traditional Japanese animation. The detailed character renderings, despite meticulous design, occasionally manifest with a certain stiffness, impacting the emotional resonance required for its dramatic beats.
The voice performances, however, remain a significant asset. Veterans such as Takahiro Sakurai (as Joe Shimamura / Cyborg 009) and Akio Ōtsuka (as Jet Link / Cyborg 002) anchor the film, imbuing their cybernetically enhanced heroes with familiar gravitas and essential charisma. The narrative, the inaugural chapter of a trilogy, functions more as an intricate setup, introducing the formidable 'Blessed' without fully developing the immediate urgency or profound stakes. Its placement within the broader superhero anime canon is complex; it represents a bold, perhaps audacious, artistic swing that, despite its ambitious scope and thematic inquiries into justice, purpose, and evolving humanity, doesn’t quite achieve the definitive impact one hopes for from the iconic Cyborg 009 team. Its lasting impression is arguably more about its experimental animation methodology than its narrative mastery.
