Life In A Year - Life In A Year (2020)

Mitja Okorn’s Life In A Year attempts to navigate the well-trodden terrain of terminal illness romance, yet largely succumbs to genre clichés rather than transcending them. While the film benefits from the earnest performances of its leads, Jaden Smith as the ambitious Daryn and Cara Delevingne as the free-spirited Isabelle, their palpable on-screen chemistry struggles against a largely predictable narrative arc. The supporting cast, including Nia Long and Cuba Gooding Jr., unfortunately feels underutilized, serving more as plot devices than fully fleshed-out characters.

Technically, the cinematography often leans into a saccharine aesthetic, utilizing vibrant color palettes and montage sequences to evoke emotional highs and lows, a technique familiar in similar teen dramas. However, this often feels more manipulative than organically resonant, failing to achieve the profound existential dread or carpe diem urgency seen in more nuanced films. The directorial vision, while clear in its intent to celebrate life, ultimately delivers a story that feels largely derived, adding little new to the cinematic conversation on youth, love, and mortality. It firmly places itself within the "sick-lit" romantic drama subgenre, echoing predecessors like The Fault in Our Stars without establishing a truly unique voice. Despite its emotional aspirations, Life In A Year remains a poignant, albeit conventional, exploration of living fully within borrowed time, appealing primarily to its target demographic.
