Synopsis
In 'The Darkest Minds' (2018), director Jennifer Yuh Nelson embarked on an ambitious live-action debut after a successful animation career, attempting to carve a niche in the dystopian Young Adult genre. Unfortunately, it largely adheres to established tropes rather than innovating. Nelson's cinematic techniques demonstrate a keen eye for visual composition and action choreography, though the depiction of psionic abilities sometimes lacks the visceral impact needed to truly immerse the audience.
The film's undeniable strength lies in Amandla Stenberg's nuanced performance as Ruby. She imbues her character with emotional depth and internal conflict, effectively portraying a young woman grappling with extraordinary powers, fear, and a yearning for freedom. Supporting turns from Mandy Moore and Gwendoline Christie add texture, even if their characters aren't fully fleshed out by the screenplay. While the narrative addresses poignant themes of prejudice, government control, and the resilience of youth, its execution remains conventional, preventing it from truly transcending the myriad of predecessors in the YA dystopian universe and leaving it feeling somewhat derivative.
