Synopsis
As an adaptation of Eileen Chang's classic novel, Half a Lifelong Romance (2020) faced the formidable challenge of recreating the poignant and complex atmosphere of 1930s Shanghai. Director Yang Yazhou endeavored to build a visually opulent world, with meticulous costume design and production settings, aiming to depict the grandeur that often masked underlying tragedies. However, the cinematic techniques occasionally overshadowed the psychological depth of the characters, leading to moments where the nuanced internal struggles, characteristic of the original work, felt underdeveloped.
The performances proved contentious. Carina Lau, as Gu Manlu, conveyed tenacity and despair, though her age occasionally disrupted the perception of the character. Jiang Xin, portraying Gu Manzhen, brought innocence and resilience, yet sometimes lacked the inherent fragility. The series emphasized the cruel fate of women in a patriarchal society, but at times over-dramatized conflicts without fully exploring the layers of meaning concerning choice and internal turmoil.
The position of Half a Lifelong Romance within the cinematic universe of Eileen Chang adaptations is complex. Despite its visual ambitions and fresh interpretations, it struggles to surpass the emotional depth and fidelity to the original spirit found in prior versions. The film is a noteworthy effort but ultimately falls short of establishing a new benchmark for literary adaptations.
