Synopsis
The 2017 live-action adaptation of 'Fullmetal Alchemist' stands as a poignant illustration of the inherent difficulties in translating beloved manga and anime into cinematic reality. Director Fumihiko Sori ambitiously tackled Hiromu Arakawa's intricate world of alchemy and philosophical depth, yet the resulting film often felt more aspirational than truly successful.
From a cinematic technique standpoint, the production poured significant resources into Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) to bring alchemy and the Homunculi to life. However, the CGI quality proved inconsistent, occasionally rendering grand action sequences less impactful and failing to capture the fluid dynamism of its animated source material. The pacing emerged as a significant structural flaw, as the narrative struggled to condense vast plotlines into a constrained runtime, consequently diluting the profound character development and core themes of brotherhood and the consequences of forbidden knowledge.
Performances by Ryosuke Yamada as Edward Elric, alongside Dean Fujioka (Roy Mustang) and Tsubasa Honda (Winry Rockbell), showcased earnest effort. Yamada endeavored to embody Ed's spirited stubbornness and internal turmoil, though sometimes falling short of the required emotional gravitas. Positioned within a broader wave of manga-anime live-action adaptations, this film unfortunately did not emerge as a standout, instead serving as a critical case study in respecting the foundational spirit and narrative integrity when transitioning a work from page to screen, particularly within the challenging fantasy Steampunk genre.
