Synopsis
Kevin Greutert’s Visions (2015), while not a genre-redefining masterpiece, offers a contemplative take on psychological horror. Diverging from his Saw franchise roots, Greutert crafts an unsettling narrative focused on Eveleigh’s (Isla Fisher) deteriorating mental state. The film effectively employs atmospheric cinematography and a disquieting sound design to immerse viewers in her subjective reality, blurring the lines between the supernatural and psychosis. Isla Fisher delivers a compelling performance, expertly conveying the character's increasing paranoia and vulnerability, anchoring the film's emotional core. However, Visions occasionally succumbs to predictable jump scares, which detract from its potential for deeper psychological exploration. Despite this, it remains an interesting study in how supernatural thrillers can leverage internal dread rather than solely relying on external frights, carving out its niche within the vast landscape of contemporary horror, even if it doesn't leave an indelible mark.
